Huliuhe Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located at the Huabao Gully (E114°41′, N40°06′), about 1 km northwest of Xiyaozitou village, Beishuiquan town, Yuxian County, Hebei Province (Cai et al., 2013 in Wang et al., 2013). It was formally named by Wang (1982).
Synonym: Zhang et al. (2003) regarded that the Huliuhe Fm is lithologically indistinguishable from its overlying Yuxian Fm, and suggested abandoning the former. Pang (2003) considered that the Huliuhe Fm is synonymous with the Shixia Fm named by Huang and Guo (1981). Liu et al. (2009) regarded that both the Yuxian Fm and Huliuhe Fm are junior synonyms of the Shixia Fm. Cai et al. (2013) agreed to treat the Huliuhe Fm as a junior synonym of the Shixia Fm.
Lithology and Thickness
Lower member consists of deep-red clays with calcareous nodules, breccia, and gravel bands. Upper member is formed by red clays with lenses of gravels. It contains mammalian fossils. Its thickness is in range of 20~103 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the type section, the Huliuhe Fm unconformably contacts with the underlying Mesozoic or Paleozoic basement rocks. Regionally, the next older unit is the Jiulongkou Fm.
Upper contact
In the type section, the Huliuhe Fm disconformably overlain by Quaternary deposits. Elsewhere, disconformably overlain by Daodi Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is distributed to both sides of the Huliu River in the Nihewan Basin, Hebei Province.
